Has to drink water in Ramadan due to loss of kidney

Question
Due to Renal cell carcinoma in the left kidney of younger brother, his kidney was removed during the surgery. He used to drink water after short intervals. What should he do in Ramadan, because his fault is permanent and not recoverable?

Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

If your brother's disease is chronic and there is no hope of cure according to the report of trustworthy medical specialists and if he cannot fast in the future, then he may give up fasting for the Saying of Allah (interpretation of meaning): {Allâh burdens not a person beyond his scope…..}[2:286].

In this case, he has to feed a poor person for every day he does not fast.

Imam al-Tabarani and al-Baihaqi reported from Anas Ibn Malik who became very weak in the year that preceded the one in which he died. So, he did not fast that year. 'He order his family members to feed a poor person for every day he missed'. This is the opinion of Ali, Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar and Abu Hurairah (Radiya Allahu Anhum). It is the opinion of Imams Ahmad, al-Shafi'e, and Abu Hanifah. Feeding a poor person is estimated a 750 grams of the food that is commonly consumed in the area where the person is doing the feeding.

However, if the disease is curable and the medical doctors allow him to fast in the future he has to make up all the days he did not fast. Allah Says (interpretation of meaning): {….but if any of you is ill or on a journey, the same number (should be made up) from other days. …}[2:184].

Allah knows best.
